For those involved, this can be a painful, toxic, damaging and confusing pattern that is extremely difficult to break. Deeply held interactional patterns learnt in childhood often make this pairing attractive and familiar. Despite its familiarity, this grouping can perpetuate feelings of low self-worth and shame.
